Description

M64 is a spiral galaxy located approximately 17 MLy's distant in the constellation Coma Berenices.  Its namesake feature is the dark dust cloud which obscures part of its bright nucleus.  Counter rotating clouds of gas in the galaxy  which may have come from a collision with a dwarf galaxy about a billion years ago are contributing to massive star formation in the area where they shear past each other.
